NOTE: To install Resolution Assistant 3.1 on a system running the Microsoft� Windows� 2000 operating system, you must have administrator privileges.

System Requirements

You can install Resolution Assistant 3.1 on supported Dell™ systems that have the following minimum hardware and software requirements.

Hardware Requirements

  • Systems:

    Dimension: L series, XPS B series, XPS T series, XPS Z series

    Inspiron: 3800, 5000, 7500
  • Memory: 32 megabytes (MB) minimum, 64 MB recommended

  • Available hard-disk drive space: 50 MB

To connect remotely, you need a connection to the Internet through a local area network (LAN) or a 28.8K baud (or higher) modem.

Software Requirements

  • Operating systems (English only):

    • Microsoft Windows� 98 Second Edition (SE)

    • Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional

  • Web browser:

    • Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0 or later

    • Netscape Navigator 4.6 or later

NOTE: If you are using America Online (AOL), you must connect to the Internet using AOL and then use one of these web browsers.
  • Java: Microsoft Java Virtual Machine version 5.00.2924 or later. This version is available on your Dell Resolution Assistant Version 3.1 Backup CD and at the Microsoft Web site at http://www.microsoft.com.

Installing Resolution Assistant 3.1

If Resolution Assistant 3.1 was installed by Dell on your system, you can use the Dell Resolution Assistant Version 3.1 Backup CD if you ever need to reinstall the application program. You can also download Resolution Assistant 3.1 from the Dell Web site at http://www.dell.com.

Installing From the CD

To install Resolution Assistant 3.1 from the CD, perform the following steps:

  1. Start Windows 98 SE or Windows 2000.

    If installing on a system with Windows 2000, you must log on with administrator privileges.


  2. Exit any open programs and disable any virus-scanning software.
    NOTE: See your virus-scanning software documentation for more information.
  1. Insert the Dell Resolution Assistant Version 3.1 Backup CD into your CD-ROM drive.

    The CD starts automatically and the Dell Resolution Assistant 3.1 Installation Setup welcome screen displays.

  2. Click Next.

  3. Read the Software License Agreement.

  4. Click Yes to accept the license terms.

  5. Follow the on-screen instructions.

Downloading and Installing From the Web

The latest version of Resolution Assistant 3.1 can be downloaded from the Dell Web site at http://www.dell.com.


Getting Started

Resolution Assistant 3.1 provides a graphical user interface (GUI) for diagnosing system problems, submitting service requests, and keeping track of service requests you have already submitted. For getting started instructions, see "Getting Started" in Using Resolution Assistant.


Uninstalling Resolution Assistant 3.1

NOTICE: When you uninstall Resolution Assistant 3.1, you lose any pending service requests that have already been submitted. You can recover the pending service requests by reinstalling Resolution Assistant 3.1. For further instructions, see "Using Resolution Assistant."

To uninstall Resolution Assistant 3.1, click the Start button, point to Settings, and click Control Panel. Double-click Add/Remove Programs, click Dell Resolution Assistant, and click Add/Remove.
