  Turning Off Your Computer

  Before Working Inside Your Computer


This section provides procedures for removing and installing the components in your computer. Unless otherwise noted, each procedure assumes that the following conditions exist:

  • You have performed the steps in Turning Off Your Computer.

  • You have read the safety information in the Dell Product Information Guide.

  • A component can be replaced or—if purchased separately—installed by performing the removal procedure in reverse order.


Recommended Tools

The procedures in this document may require the following tools:

  • Small flat-blade screwdriver

  • Phillips screwdriver

  • Small plastic scribe

  • 5-mm hex nut driver

  • Flash BIOS update program CD

  • Processor extraction tool


Turning Off Your Computer

NOTICE: To avoid losing data, save and close all open files and exit all open programs before you turn off your computer.
  1. Shut down the operating system:

    1. Save and close all open files and exit all open programs.

    1. In the Microsoft® Windows® XP operating system, click Start® Shut Down® Shut down.

      In Microsoft® Windows Vista™, click the Windows Vista Start button in the lower-left corner of the desktop, click the arrow in the lower-right corner of the Start menu as shown below, and then click Shut Down.



The computer turns off after the operating system shutdown process is complete.

  1. Ensure that the computer and all attached devices are turned off. If your computer and attached devices did not automatically turn off when you shut down your operating system, press and hold the power button for about 4 seconds to turn them off.


Before Working Inside Your Computer

Use the following safety guidelines to help protect your computer from potential damage and to help ensure your own personal safety.

CAUTION: Before you begin any of the procedures in this section, follow the safety instructions in the Product Information Guide.
CAUTION: Handle components and cards with care. Do not touch the components or contacts on a card. Hold a card by its edges or by its metal mounting bracket. Hold a component such as a processor by its edges, not by its pins.
CAUTION: To avoid electrostatic discharge, ground yourself by using a wrist grounding strap or by periodically touching an unpainted metal surface, such as a connector on the back of the computer.
NOTICE: Only a certified service technician should perform repairs on your computer. Damage due to servicing that is not authorized by Dell is not covered by your warranty.
NOTICE: Handle components and cards with care. Do not touch the components or contacts on a card. Hold a card by its edges or by its metal mounting bracket. Hold a component, such as a processor, by its edges, not by its pins.
NOTICE: When disconnecting a cable, pull on the cable's connector or on its pull-tab, not on the cable itself. Some cables have connectors with locking tabs; before disconnecting this type of cable, press inward on the locking tabs to release the connector. When connecting or disconnecting a cable, ensure that the connectors are correctly oriented and aligned to avoid damage to the connector and/or the connector's pins.
NOTICE: To avoid damaging the computer, perform the following steps before you begin working inside the computer.
  1. Ensure that the work surface is flat and clean to prevent the computer cover from being scratched.

NOTICE: To avoid losing data, save and close any open files and exit any open programs before you turn off your computer.
  1. Save and close any open files, exit any open programs, then shut down the operating system and turn off all attached devices:

In the Microsoft® Windows Vista™ operating system, click Start , click the arrow icon, and then click Shut Down.

In the Microsoft Windows XP operating system, click Start® Shut Down® Shut down.

The computer turns off after the operating system shutdown process finishes.

NOTE: Ensure that the computer is off and not in a power management mode. If you cannot shut down the computer using the operating system, press and hold the power button for 4 seconds.
  1. Disconnect your computer and all attached devices from their electrical outlets.

NOTICE: To disconnect a network cable, first unplug the cable from your computer, and then unplug it from the network device.
  1. Disconnect all external cables from the computer.

  2. Close the display and turn the computer upside down on a flat work surface.

  3. Remove the battery:

    1. Slide the two battery-bay latch releases on the bottom of the computer toward the sides of the computer until they are engaged.

    1. Grasp the battery by the battery tab, and then slide the battery horizontally toward the front of the computer.

    2. Lift the battery from the battery bay.

  1. Turn the computer over and press the power button to ground the system board.

  2. Remove the PC Card or ExpressCard, if installed, from the PC Card slot (see Removing a PC Card or Blank).

  3. Remove the smart card, if installed, from the smart card slot (see Removing a Smart Card).
